The development of adult education in Sweden has over the last few decades caused a shift in education policy. The Adult Education government proposal in year 2000 took an extensive grasp of adult learning. It referred not only to education in formal environments, but also to wider areas of learning in both informal and non-formal environments, such as those in everyday-life and work-life. Future adult education is expected to develop towards the individuals’ needs and desires, and encourage and support the adult’s participation in lifelong learning. Adult learning is seen as an important part of a lifelong learning-system, that encompasses the individual’s life span.
There was a need for a centre to develop and maintain a comprehensive knowledge base and to promote the development of adult learning as well as lifelong learning. In year 2001 the School of Education and Communication in Jönköping was commissioned by the government to develop this unique centre for adult learning and lifelong learning.
